This Woman's Work.

How have I lived almost 35 years and not heard this song before? Last night on American Idol Michael Lynch sang this at the end of the show. I wasn't really sure what the song was all about, but after everyone was raving over it I had to do a bit of googling on it. Apparently, it was originally written for a movie called, "She's Having a Baby." I watched a clip (click HERE for movie clip) from the movie where the song is played, and it's basically about this young couple having their first child but the child is breeched and she ends up having surgery. The song is playing during the surgery scene (they won't let the husband come in and he panics) and the husband is reflecting back on their life, and all the things he shoulda woulda coulda done better, etc. I was crying like a hormonal pregnant woman watching it! Wait, I am! So back on AI, I really liked how Kara cried and said that she could relate since she didn't have a child (that made me sad). For some reason I really like her--she is my favorite judge. And then it was so sweet how Simon was with her (y'all know he's usually so grumpy). So overall it was a good moment on AI and I thought I'd post the link here if you wanted to see the performance. I love gospel, I love soul--so I really liked his rendition of this song. CLICK HERE for the american idol clip.

Here's the lyrics to the song, I think they can be interpreted in a few different ways--which is always cool with songwriting...

Pray God you can cope.
I stand outside this woman's work,
This woman's world.
Ooh, it's hard on the man,
Now his part is over.
Now starts the craft of the father.

I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things I should've said,
That I never said.
All the things we should've done,
That we never did.
All the things I should've given,
But I didn't.

Oh, darling, make it go,
Make it go away.

Give me these moments back.
Give them back to me.
Give me that little kiss.
Give me your hand.

(I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.)

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things we should've said,
That were never said.
All the things we should've done,
That we never did.
All the things that you needed from me.
All the things that you wanted for me.
All the things that I should've given,
But I didn't.

Oh, darling, make it go away.
Just make it go away now.
